During our week-long summer program, campers receive instrument instruction, form bands, and write original songs to be performed at the end-of-camp Girls Rock! RVA Showcase. Campers get to see daily live performances by local musical artists, and participate in a wide range of non-musical workshops that aim to build self-confidence and encourage personal exploration and growth.
On the first day of camp, campers are divided into bands based on their age group. Each band has a drummer, guitarist, bassist, keyboardist, and singer. Bands choose a name and get to work writing and receiving instrument instruction on day one! Each day at camp features opening and closing assemblies, workshops covering a range of confidence-building and self-expression topics, instrument instruction, band practice, and a group lunch with a live local band!
Later in the week, when bands have had time to write and practice their original songs, we hold a dress rehearsal before the Saturday Showcase. At the showcase, bands get to perform for a large audience, with a sound engineer, through a professional PA!
